Let's face it, public polling means a disproportional lot to those who govern. Not that I think it SHOULD. I don't think poll results should mean as much as
they do to the electorate who represent the people of this country. Polls can easily be manipulated to create a false-nation of opinion.
Poll-results are often exactly (and "miraculously") what potentially-biased pollsters were possibly hoping to "cook up".
At best, a poll is only a sampling of an extremely small segment of American society.
Consideration of the law of large numbers might well drown the accuracy of these poll results.

I gave the above-linked website a look today.
Perhaps I'm naive...but it appears we now have to PAY to voice our opinions so that they may be heard by the electorate as they foolishly govern by POLL.

When the basic democratic system fails...when a letter or call to your Congressperson seems to take a back seat to governing by polls,

ON BEING A DESERT

Being a Desert

There is an ancient teaching that is at the core of true spiritual development: in order to connect constantly to the Light of the Creator we must develop and become like the desert.

The desert is un-owned, open space within which anybody can do anything they want. This is the level to which we are supposed to develop. Being like the desert means that you do not care what people do to you, what people say to you, or what they do not do for you or say to you. It means being free in the deepest sense.

Our nature is usually the opposite of the desert. We are extremely and constantly concerned about what people do, say or even think about us. We are captive to almost everybody, for their actions, words and even thoughts can influence our feelings and life. In order to develop spiritually we need to constantly work on becoming like the desert, feeling open and free like the desert. It is not an easy process but one that not only greatly enables our spiritual development, but also brings to a level of equanimity and peace that cannot be reached any other way.

It is a process that takes constant focus and effort but one whose spiritual and practical effect is immense.

For Partisan Gain, Republicans Decide Rules Were Meant to Be Broken

There was a lot not to like about the new Congressional district lines Republicans tried to push through in Texas this month, the ones that made Democratic legislators flee to Oklahoma to prevent a vote. Democratic Austin was sliced into four parts and parceled out to nearby Republican districts. A community on the Mexican border and one 300 miles away were painstakingly joined together and declared to be a single Congressional district. But the real problem was that Republicans were redrawing lines that had just been adopted in 2001, defying the rule that redistricting occurs only once a decade, after the census.

The Texas power grab is part of a trend. Republicans, who now control all three branches of the federal government, are not just pushing through their political agenda. They are increasingly ignoring the rules of government to do it. While the Texas redistricting effort failed, Republicans succeeded in enacting an equally partisan redistricting plan in Colorado. And Republicans in the Senate — notably those involved in the highly charged issue of judicial confirmations — have been just as quick to throw out the rulebook.

These partisan attacks on the rules of government may be more harmful, and more destabilizing, than bad policies, like the $320 billion tax cut. Modern states, the German sociologist Max Weber wrote, derive their legitimacy from "rational authority," a system in which rules apply in equal and predictable ways, and even those who lead are reined in by limits on their power. When the rules of government are stripped away, people can begin to regard their government as illegitimate.

The Texas redistricting effort was part of a national Republican effort to shore up the party's 229-to-205 House majority going into the 2004 elections. The House majority leader, Tom DeLay, who traveled to Austin to supervise the effort personally, was blunt about his motives: "I'm the majority leader, and I want more seats." Texas Republicans seized control of the Legislature last year, and they thought they could add five or more Republican Congressional seats. When the Democrats took off for Oklahoma, the Department of Homeland Security helped hunt down a plane filled with escaping legislators. Sixteen members of Congress from Texas wrote to Attorney General John Ashcroft asking him whether there had been "attempts to divert federal law enforcement resources for private political gain."

In Colorado, Republicans succeeded this month in redrawing the state's Congressional lines, which had been duly redrawn after the 2000 census. Republican state legislators, under the guidance of the presidential adviser Karl Rove, added thousands of Republicans to a district that Bob Beauprez, a Republican, won last year by just 121 votes, and excluded the Democrat who nearly beat him from the district. Democrats have gone to court, charging that Republicans violated Colorado's Open Meetings Law and legislative rules when they sneaked the plan through.

In the judicial battles in the Senate, Republican leaders, frustrated that Democrats have rejected a handful of Bush nominees, have declared war on longstanding Senate rules. Orrin Hatch, chairman of the Judiciary Committee, has dispensed with procedures that allow senators to exercise their constitutional "advice and consent" function, in one case holding a single hearing for three controversial nominees, and he has stifled legitimate inquiry. When Senator Charles Schumer tried to ask one nominee about his legal beliefs, Senator Hatch snapped that he was asking "stupid questions."

The Senate majority leader, Bill Frist, has declared that filibusters, which allow senators to block action with just 41 votes, should not be used to reject judicial nominations, despite a history of using them to do just that. Abe Fortas was prevented from becoming chief justice in 1968 by a Republican-backed filibuster. While Senator Frist pushes "filibuster reform," Senate Republicans are also talking about a "nuclear option," in which Vice President Dick Cheney would preside over the Senate and hand down a ruling that Rule 22, which permits filibusters, does not apply to judicial nominations.

The Republicans' attack on the rules come at a time when they could easily afford to take a higher road. They have, by virtue of their control of the White House and Congress, extraordinary power to enact laws and shape the national agenda. And this administration is already getting far more of its judges confirmed, and more quickly, than the Clinton administration did.

Weber, in writing about rules, was concerned about what factors kept governments in power. That is not a concern in the United States — there is no uprising in the offing. But when Americans see their government flouting the rules, as they did during Watergate, they respond with cynicism.

In these hard times — with threats from abroad and a sour economy at home — our leaders should be bringing the nation together not by demonizing foreign countries, but by instilling greater faith in our own. They should be showing greater reverence for the rules of government, and looking for other ways — like tougher campaign finance laws — to assure Americans that their government operates evenhandedly.

How likely is that? The word in Texas is that Republicans may try their redistricting plan again. Senate Democrats are bracing for Senator Frist's "filibuster reform," or the "nuclear option."

And Mr. DeLay recently revealed how he felt about rules of general applicability. When he tried smoking a cigar in a restaurant on federal property, the manager told him it violated federal law. His response, according to The Washington Post, was, "I am the federal government."

Who says George W doesn't love working people? I saw him hug one!

The occasion was yet another Bush photo-op, this one in Little Rock at a pep rally to cheer George's plan to give at least half-a-trillion dollars from our public treasury to America's richest people. The Arkansas Republican Party handpicked the cheering audience for the event and, as the TV cameras rolled, a worker was brought onstage for George to hug.

Why a worker? It's part of the Bushite flim flam, trying to deceive We the People into thinking that while this massive giveaway of public funds actually would go into the silk pockets of the wealthy, it's really being done for us – or, as Bush said at the staged media event, "for the American worker."

Workers sure could use a break. Since Bush took office, 2.6 million jobs have been lost, long-term unemployment is up by 184 percent, an additional two million Americans have no health insurance, wages are stagnant, pensions are being eliminated, and more corporations are abandoning America to exploit cheap labor abroad.

But instead of simply putting money directly in the hands of workers by, say, requiring corporations to pay a living wage or by cutting the payroll taxes that workers and small businesses pay – the Bushites are practicing the same old trickle-down economics that George's daddy once ridiculed as "voodoo."

Fatten the rich, goes this bankrupt theory, and they'll buy more luxury SUVs, causing more autoworkers to be hired, and – trickle, trickle – the economy to be stimulated. But wait, the rich are few in number and will only buy so many SUVs – besides, most SUVs aren't made in the U.S., so there won't be any trickle-down on American workers nor any stimulus for our economy.

This is Jim Hightower saying... Bush should have been hugging a Wall Street speculator, for that's his true love. Bush's "economic stimulus" is a fraud – the rich get the money, the rest of us get a made-for-TV hug. Try taking that to the bank. "

The three commissioners who oversee the DPS were appointed by Bush
when he was governor and have other political connections to Bush and
his family.
Commissioner Bobby Holt of Midland was political finance chairman for
Bush's father, the former president.
Commissioner Jim Francis was chairman of the Bush Pioneers,
individuals who raised more than $100,000 for the current president's
2000 election campaign.
Francis also has close ties to senior presidential adviser Karl Rove.

The Truth Will Emerge

Truth has a way of asserting itself despite all attempts to obscure it. Distortion only serves to derail it for a time. No matter to what lengths we humans may go to obfuscate facts or delude our fellows, truth has a way of squeezing out through the cracks, eventually.

But the danger is that at some point it may no longer matter. The danger is that damage is done before the truth is widely realized. The reality is that, sometimes, it is easier to ignore uncomfortable facts and go along with whatever distortion is currently in vogue. We see a lot of this today in politics. I see a lot of it -- more than I would ever have believed -- right on this Senate Floor.

Regarding the situation in Iraq, it appears to this Senator that the American people may have been lured into accepting the unprovoked invasion of a sovereign nation, in violation of long-standing International law, under false premises. There is ample evidence that the horrific events of September 11 have been carefully manipulated to switch public focus from Osama Bin Laden and Al Queda who masterminded the September 11th attacks, to Saddam Hussein who did not. The run up to our invasion of Iraq featured the President and members of his cabinet invoking every frightening image they could conjure, from mushroom clouds, to buried caches of germ warfare, to drones poised to deliver germ laden death in our major cities. We were treated to a heavy dose of overstatement concerning Saddam Hussein's direct threat to our freedoms. The tactic was guaranteed to provoke a sure reaction from a nation still suffering from a combination of post traumatic stress and justifiable anger after the attacks of 911. It was the exploitation of fear. It was a placebo for the anger.

Since the war's end, every subsequent revelation which has seemed to refute the previous dire claims of the Bush Administration has been brushed aside. Instead of addressing the contradictory evidence, the White House deftly changes the subject. No weapons of mass destruction have yet turned up, but we are told that they will in time. Perhaps they yet will. But, our costly and destructive bunker busting attack on Iraq seems to have proven, in the main, precisely the opposite of what we were told was the urgent reason to go in. It seems also to have, for the present, verified the assertions of Hans Blix and the inspection team he led, which President Bush and company so derided. As Blix always said, a lot of time will be needed to find such weapons, if they do, indeed, exist. Meanwhile Bin Laden is still on the loose and Saddam Hussein has come up missing.

The Administration assured the U.S. public and the world, over and over again, that an attack was necessary to protect our people and the world from terrorism. It assiduously worked to alarm the public and blur the faces of Saddam Hussein and Osama Bin Laden until they virtually became one.

What has become painfully clear in the aftermath of war is that Iraq was no immediate threat to the U.S. Ravaged by years of sanctions, Iraq did not even lift an airplane against us. Iraq's threatening death-dealing fleet of unmanned drones about which we heard so much morphed into one prototype made of plywood and string. Their missiles proved to be outdated and of limited range. Their army was quickly overwhelmed by our technology and our well trained troops.

Presently our loyal military personnel continue their mission of diligently searching for WMD. They have so far turned up only fertilizer, vacuum cleaners, conventional weapons, and the occasional buried swimming pool. They are misused on such a mission and they continue to be at grave risk. But, the Bush team's extensive hype of WMD in Iraq as justification for a preemptive invasion has become more than embarrassing. It has raised serious questions about prevarication and the reckless use of power. Were our troops needlessly put at risk? Were countless Iraqi civilians killed and maimed when war was not really necessary? Was the American public deliberately misled? Was the world?

What makes me cringe even more is the continued claim that we are "liberators." The facts don't seem to support the label we have so euphemistically attached to ourselves. True, we have unseated a brutal, despicable despot, but "liberation" implies the follow up of freedom, self-determination and a better life for the common people. In fact, if the situation in Iraq is the result of "liberation," we may have set the cause of freedom back 200 years.

Despite our high-blown claims of a better life for the Iraqi people, water is scarce, and often foul, electricity is a sometime thing, food is in short supply, hospitals are stacked with the wounded and maimed, historic treasures of the region and of the Iraqi people have been looted, and nuclear material may have been disseminated to heaven knows where, while U.S. troops, on orders, looked on and guarded the oil supply.

Meanwhile, lucrative contracts to rebuild Iraq's infrastructure and refurbish its oil industry are awarded to Administration cronies, without benefit of competitive bidding, and the U.S. steadfastly resists offers of U.N. assistance to participate. Is there any wonder that the real motives of the U.S. government are the subject of worldwide speculation and mistrust?

And in what may be the most damaging development, the U.S. appears to be pushing off Iraq's clamor for self-government. Jay Garner has been summarily replaced, and it is becoming all too clear that the smiling face of the U.S. as liberator is quickly assuming the scowl of an occupier. The image of the boot on the throat has replaced the beckoning hand of freedom. Chaos and rioting only exacerbate that image, as U.S. soldiers try to sustain order in a land ravaged by poverty and disease. "Regime change" in Iraq has so far meant anarchy, curbed only by an occupying military force and a U.S. administrative presence that is evasive about if and when it intends to depart.

Democracy and Freedom cannot be force fed at the point of an occupier's gun. To think otherwise is folly. One has to stop and ponder. How could we have been so impossibly naive? How could we expect to easily plant a clone of U.S. culture, values, and government in a country so riven with religious, territorial, and tribal rivalries, so suspicious of U.S. motives, and so at odds with the galloping materialism which drives the western-style economies?

As so many warned this Administration before it launched its misguided war on Iraq, there is evidence that our crack down in Iraq is likely to convince 1,000 new Bin Ladens to plan other horrors of the type we have seen in the past several days. Instead of damaging the terrorists, we have given them new fuel for their fury. We did not complete our mission in Afghanistan because we were so eager to attack Iraq. Now it appears that Al Queda is back with a vengeance. We have returned to orange alert in the U.S., and we may well have destabilized the Mideast region, a region we have never fully understood. We have alienated friends around the globe with our dissembling and our haughty insistence on punishing former friends who may not see things quite our way.

The path of diplomacy and reason have gone out the window to be replaced by force, unilateralism, and punishment for transgressions. I read most recently with amazement our harsh castigation of Turkey, our longtime friend and strategic ally. It is astonishing that our government is berating the new Turkish government for conducting its affairs in accordance with its own Constitution and its democratic institutions.

Indeed, we may have sparked a new international arms race as countries move ahead to develop WMD as a last ditch attempt to ward off a possible preemptive strike from a newly belligerent U.S. which claims the right to hit where it wants. In fact, there is little to constrain this President. Congress, in what will go down in history as its most unfortunate act, handed away its power to declare war for the foreseeable future and empowered this President to wage war at will.

As if that were not bad enough, members of Congress are reluctant to ask questions which are begging to be asked. How long will we occupy Iraq? We have already heard disputes on the numbers of troops which will be needed to retain order. What is the truth? How costly will the occupation and rebuilding be? No one has given a straight answer. How will we afford this long-term massive commitment, fight terrorism at home, address a serious crisis in domestic healthcare, afford behemoth military spending and give away billions in tax cuts amidst a deficit which has climbed to over $340 billion for this year alone? If the President's tax cut passes it will be $400 billion. We cower in the shadows while false statements proliferate. We accept soft answers and shaky explanations because to demand the truth is hard, or unpopular, or may be politically costly.

But, I contend that, through it all, the people know. The American people unfortunately are used to political shading, spin, and the usual chicanery they hear from public officials. They patiently tolerate it up to a point. But there is a line. It may seem to be drawn in invisible ink for a time, but eventually it will appear in dark colors, tinged with anger. When it comes to shedding American blood - - when it comes to wreaking havoc on civilians, on innocent men, women, and children, callous dissembling is not acceptable. Nothing is worth that kind of lie - - not oil, not revenge, not reelection, not somebody's grand pipedream of a democratic domino theory.

And mark my words, the calculated intimidation which we see so often of late by the "powers that be" will only keep the loyal opposition quiet for just so long. Because eventually, like it always does, the truth will emerge. And when it does, this house of cards, built of deceit, will fall. "

I am concerned that the Bush administration and Congress have not yet faced up to the true size of the task that lies ahead, or prepared the American people for it. The administration should state clearly that we are engaged in "nation-building." We are constructing the future in Iraq. It's a complicated and uncertain business, and it's not made any easier when some in the Pentagon talk about quick exit strategies or say dismissively that they don't do nation-building. The days when Americans could win battles and then come home quickly for a parade are over.

The public and Congress need to know what we're getting into. Starting today, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee will hold hearings to give the administration a chance to share its plans with the American people and to begin a debate on the important issues for Iraq's future. I want to see evidence that the administration is in this for the long haul to create a stable, democratic Iraq, and to acknowledge that this will place a significant burden on the American people. Story: PRESIDENT BUSH MAY INVOKE EXECUTIVE PRIVILEGE TO KEEP 9-11 DOCUMENTS AWAY FROM CONGRESSIONAL INVESTIGATORS

Newsweek is reporting President Bush may try to invoke executive privilege to keep key documents relating to the September 11 attacks out of the hands of investigators with the independent panel created by Congress to probe all aspects of 9-11.
Last week, we spoke with Newsweek investigative reporter Michael Isikoff, who said that administration officials are waging a behind-the-scenes battle to restrict public disclosure of an 800-page secret report prepared by a joint congressional inquiry. The report details intelligence and law-enforcement failures that preceded the September 11 attacks, including warnings given to President Bush and his top advisors during the summer of 2001.
This week, Isikoff and Mark Hosenball are reporting chief that White House council Alberto Gonzales privately told the chair of the 9-11 panel Thomas Kean that the White House may seek to invoke executive privilege over documents sought by the commission. (Thomas Kean is the former Republican governor of New Jersey who Bush named to chair the panel.)
Among the most sensitive documents the commission is interested in reviewing are internal National Security Council minutes from the spring and summer of 2001. That is when the CIA and other intelligence agencies were warning that an attack by Al Qaeda could well be imminent.
The panel is also expected to seek interviews with key players in the Bush administration such as national security adviser Condoleezza Rice. And the panel will likely request to review debriefings of key Al Qaeda suspects who have been arrested.

"The Sharon government had an impressive diplomatic achievement this week. In
the hands of the seemingly clumsy leader, actually a Speedy Gonzales, it
appears the entire diplomatic structure built by the president of the
American superpower with staunch pledges for peace is collapsing.
One small sign of this was a weekend address when George Bush - still
chewing the rhetorical gravel of the vision named for him - suddenly made no
mention of the road map meant to fulfill his vision.
But there is further evidence piling up from every direction showing that,
even before Sharon opens his mouth, the administration has no appetite to
eat the political stew that it had cooked up.
And this is certainly the case after Sharon speaks, like in the interview he
gave in yesterday's Jerusalem Post. With political rudeness, the minute
Colin Powell left, the prime minister said Jews will continue living in
Shiloh and Beit El under Israeli sovereignty. That, of course, was the
absolute opposite of one of those supposedly moderate remarks that he tossed
out in a Haaretz interview a month ago.
In his conversations with Powell, Sharon did not feel any special need to
explain his opposition to gestures. Hearing a polite reminder about a
settlement freeze, Sharon asked, actually mocking Powell, if he was
recommending abortions. The somewhat impressive step under these
circumstances - removing a number of outposts - didn't even come up. The
administration doesn't want to quarrel. Certainly not a secretary of state
isolated at the conservative top.
Because Powell knows what Sharon knows: In the thin atmosphere where the
presidential vision is floating, there's no real desire to push for an
Israeli-Palestinian deal. In their conversations, Powell spoke clearly, but
well understood that the visit was an idle move before Sharon's trip to the
White House. The secretary rejected Sharon's position that the gestures from
both sides have to be "serial." They have to be parallel, without
conditions. He tried to tempt Sharon on the matter of the right of return.
If you make an announcement that Israel will not accept the right of return
in any agreement, he told the prime minister, America will back you up. But
mostly, he filled his mission with reiterated messages that the president is
"determined" to move the process forward.
But the reasons that turned Powell's jaunt into something so wimpy will
continue to play a role in the Sharon-Bush meeting. The reasons have been
listed many times, and the passing time only sharpens them: The president's
aversion to any tension with the Jewish voters, the skepticism in his
surroundings about the benefits of nurturing a radical national movement in
a Muslim region full of dictators.
Because of these reasons and their ilk, Martin Indyk, a former senior
administration official and ambassador to Israel, asked ironically, why
didn't Bush pick up the phone to Sharon to make clear that the secretary's
visit must be a success, accompanied therefore by steps of compromise?
Sharon's opposition to any such moves was so sourly evident that only a very
specific American position could accept it. Which position? The one that has
long assumed that the American strategy does not abide by pressure on Israel
and shoving a Palestinian state down its throat.
In the huge spin before the war, Bush clearly showed that he knows how to
stick tenaciously to a goal, while constantly changing the texts that
explain it. Thus, the elimination of weapons of mass destruction as the
reason for the war quickly gave way to getting rid of a tyrant. In our case,
the exact opposite has happened. The presidential text has become more
determined in its language, but the deed - the manner in which the vision is
executed - is what is changing, fading and evaporating.
This progression of events in the history of the Bush peace initiative -
from determination to wimpiness - is not only Sharon's achievement. The
prime minister's success would not have been possible without a willing ear
in Washington ready to pick up the message. It's the undoubted consensus
among American commentators that the main thing on the president's mind now
is his re-election. So, there aren't many opportunities left to find out if
the Bush vision is worth more than the hot air blown into it. Sharon's trip
to him next week might be the last such chance."
