Democracy isn't done alone in front of the television.
It's done in the conversations we have about the world as it is and how we dream it could be.
It's done in conversations among people of diverse backgrounds and views.
This kind of conversation isn't the same as the conversation we all have with our friends and family.
While those conversations are also important, if our conversations are limited just to those with whom we share a
common background, then they serve only to lock us ever more tightly within our own echo chambers and promote the
segmentation of society and the intractability of special interests that we see today.
