David Brooks on Chicago and Journalism

David Brooks on Chicago and Journalism

I really enjoyed David Brooks' New York Times column today, where he talks about one of my all-time favorite columnists, Mike Royko (who appears on this list of famous Ukrainian folks along with members of my own clan). My dad recently lent me a book called One More Time that consists of a compilation of Mike's columns, and it's next on my list. Jimmy Breslin is another voice I don't hear enough from these days.

I believe that a good part of the reason why the working class guy and gal get politically short-changed in America today is because so few people are writing about their real lives. No one seems to know who they are anymore.

A couple exceptions are Syracuse Post Standard wrtiters Sean Kirst and Dick Case, who both "get it."
