Books I Haven't Read

Three books have recently been recommended to me that have been available for some time, but I have either missed or overlooked them while spending time writing my own stories and blog entries.

The first recommendation I've received is a novel titled The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. The blogger known as Broom of Anger has recently finished reading the book and offers a brief review. See this 2003 essay from Mr. Hosseini about a trip to Afghanistan in which life imitates art. Mr. Hosseini is a physician in the San Francisco Bay Area. 'The Kite Runner' was his debut novel.


The second recommended book is Address Unknown by Kathrine Kressmann Taylor. An Amazon.com review says:

When it first appeared in Story magazine in 1938, Address Unknown became an immediate social phenomenon and literary sensation. Published in book form a year later and banned in Nazi Germany, it garnered high praise in the United States and much of Europe. A series of fictional letters between a Jewish art dealer living in San Francisco and his former business partner, who has returned to Germany, Address Unknown is a haunting tale of enormous and enduring impact.

The third book is non-fiction. "Price of Honor: Muslim Women Lift the Veil of Silence on the Islamic World" by Jan Goodwin
Goodwin traveled to 10 countries to interview Muslim women who revealed how their oppressive and confining political systems have affected their lives.

SYRACUSE

The Syracuse Peace Council sponsored a memorial reading of the names of those killed as a result of the Iraq war. Just a stone's throw away, there was a special mass held in honor of Pope John Paul II at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. I attended both. At the reading, I heard the names of Iraqi citizens who were victims (recalling one aged 6, another aged 91), along with coalition troops and American troops. I thought of the Pope and how he spoke out against the war as unjust. I think he would have been smiling upon the Peace Council volunteer readers and their respectful listeners today.

India and Pakistan on Thursday launched a historic bus link to reunite divided families on both sides of Kashmir. Kashmiris wept joyfully and clutched their loved ones after being reunited by the historic bus service. “It’s a blessing. "Neo-pan-Arab West-blaming, which focuses on the symbols of neo-imperialism in Iraq and Palestine, deflects attention from the gross failures of domestic politics in the separate nations of the Arab world, and usefully serve the purposes of the ruling elites in Egypt, Syria, Saudi and elsewhere. Neo-pan-Arabism plays to the worst majority-rule instincts within the Middle East. It disallows distinctions between cultures, but also between political experience and history.

The US-UK alliance’s war in Iraq is to blame for only adding more fuel to this old ideological fire. As many liberal Arab commentators predicted, it has narrowed the margins of political discourse in the Arab world even further (opposition calls for reform – as we saw in Beirut – are immediately attacked for ‘betraying the country to the US’) and has tarnished the principle of democracy. But regardless, it is time to say that pan-Arabism of this nature does not serve anyone’s interests.

The Bush Administration’s democratization programme can, as we have seen in Georgia, Ukraine, Beirut (and perhaps even Kyrgyzstan), provide the impetus for real change if properly made use of. Reformers in the Middle East, be they of secular, Islamist, liberal or socialist ilk, cannot afford to fall into the trap set by their own authorities which casts reform as American and therefore suspect to the point of treachery. Let us hope that broad Arab support for the Lebanese ‘revolution’ (whatever its character) heralds a new era – when the Arab world realizes that to stand up to the West, it must use it."

Peter Jennings - My prayers are with you



I am very sorry to hear that Peter Jennings has lung cancer. I sensed that he was feeling very ill last Friday as he delivered the evening news and my heart goes out to him and his family. My own mother has been struggling with cancer for the past two years and I know the toll it takes upon the patient and caring supporters around him or her. In the case of serious illness, even as we take mental count of our losses, it is also a time to fully realize all the blessings we have in this life and to appreciate what it means to be fully alive, despite hardships. Times of life transition can be portals to deeper connections with our own inner wisdom and with those we love. My prayers are with Peter and his family.

Tom DeLay - Ultimate Poster Boy for D.C. Corruption

- I think it's a shame that Republican House representatives consciously chose to put 'Party' ahead of 'Country' today by defending the egregious and arrogantly unethical political activities of Tom Delay. House Republicans expressed strong support for the Majority Leader, dismissing Democratic criticism of DeLay as "evidence of partisan politics." If we are aiming to be a united and consistently moral and ethical America, we have to start criticizing somewhere, and it may as well be with the most powerful perpetrator of unethical political behavior. It's time for our Representatives to make the nation's interests their top priority. Accusations of partisanship, when a booming majority of citizens can see that Delay is the ultimate poster boy for corruption of power in D.C., are insults to our intelligence and sense of ethics. Do they think we can't detect their ethical inconsistency? Borrowing from Gandhi, we must be the change we all want to see. A very large majority of Americans are appalled by the greasy-palmed cooperation between our Representatives and lobbyists in Washington, D.C. It's gone on far too long in the bold light of day. Shame on House Republicans! They displayed a total disrespect for the values of truth and honesty today.

The New York Times reported Wednesday that Tom DeLay's wife and daughter have been paid more than $500,000 since 2001 by his political action and campaign committees.


Tragedy in San Jose de Apartado

The crimes Oscar Romero gave his life opposing are being committed today in Colombia. In response to the killing of eight members of the Colombian peace community San Jose de Apartado, activists organized by Witness for Peace (WFP) and the Fellowship of Reconciliation (FOR) held a vigil at the U.S. State Department, which is responsible for certifying Colombia to receive billions of dollars in military aid. The peace community holds the Colombian military responsible for the killings, which included dismemberment of bodies with machetes. Jesus Abad Colorado was a photojournalist who accompanied the community members who had spent four days in search of the bodies. You can take action by writing a letter to the State Department. There will be what's called a hybrid solar eclipse on Friday, which happens to be the day of Pope John Paul II's funeral. I'm not particularly superstitious, but knowing that the Sun will be briefly plunged into darkness on the day of the Pope's funeral is just a little spooky. I'm sure many people will see it as a strange and meaningful coincidence.

On that same day, it will also be the 28th anniversary of my maternal grandfather's funeral and the 28th birthday of my cousin Joseph. I remember because his mother went into labor during Grandfather's funeral service.

Saul Bellow has passed away at the age of 83.

Saul Bellow was born in Lachine, Quebec, a suburb of Montreal, in 1915, and was raised in Chicago. He attended the University of Chicago, received his Bachelor's degree from Northwestern University in 1937, with honors in sociology and anthropology, did graduate work at the University of Wisconsin, and served in the Merchant Marine during World War II.

Mr. Bellow's first novel, Dangling Man, was published in 1944, and his second, The Victim, in 1947. In 1948 he was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship and spent two years in Paris and traveling in Europe, where he began The Adventures of Augie March, which won the National Book Award for fiction in 1954. Later books include Seize The Day (1956), Henderson The Rain King (1959), Herzog (1964), Mosby's Memoirs and Other Stories (1968), and Mr. Sammler's Planet (1970). His most recent work of fiction, Humboldt's Gift (1975), was awarded the Pulitzer Prize. Both Herzog and Mr. Sammler's Planet were awarded the National Book Award for fiction. Mr. Bellow's first non-fiction work, To Jerusalem and Back: A Personal Account, published on October 25,1976, is his personal and literary record of his sojourn in Israel during several months in 1975.

In 1965 Mr. Bellow was awarded the International Literary Prize for Herzog, becoming the first American to receive the prize. In January 1968 the Republic of France awarded him the Croix de Chevalier des Arts et Lettres, the highest literary distinction awarded by that nation to non-citizens, and in March 1968 he received the B'nai B'rith Jewish Heritage Award for "excellence in Jewish literature", and in November 1976 he was awarded the America's Democratic Legacy Award of the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith, the first time this award has been made to a literary personage.

A playwright as well as a novelist, Saul Bellow was the author of The Last Analysis and of three short plays, collectively entitled Under the Weather, which were produced on Broadway in 1966. He has contributed fiction to Partisan Review, Playboy, Harper's Bazaar, The New Yorker, Esquire, and to literary quarterlies. His criticism has appeared in The New York Times Book Review, Horizon, Encounter, The New Republic, The New Leader, and elsewhere. During the 1967 Arab-lsraeli conflict, he served as a war correspondent for Newsday. He has taught at Bard College, Princeton University, and the University of Minnesota, and was a member of the Committee on Social Thought at the University of Chicago.

Seriously, What's Wrong With the San Francisco Board of Supervisors?

Now I'm really worked up.

Skippy's post at American Street today is a must-read. Skippy has gleaned the story from Dan Gillmor and CJR.

I've worked my fingers to the bone for almost three years straight and have not made a dime for blogging. As a matter of fact, I'm in the red over it. The San Francisco Board of Supervisors is considering a new city ordinance which would entail requiring any blogger that mentions a candidate for local office that receives more than 500 hits to pay a registration fee and become subject to web site traffic audits. That would eliminate many bloggers' freedom to speak in a country which allegedly prides itself on freedom of speech and democracy. As usual, it would mean only the people with enough money would get to talk about their favorite candidates or issues. That is unAmerican, unconstitutional, and against freedom of speech. Web audits? They're acting like the Gestapo, for Pete's sake. In short, the proposal's wording is not clear, it creates a slippery (and unequal) slope for bloggers' freedom of speech based upon how much they can afford to pay to be able to speak, and it should be brought to light and not allowed to pass.

Sluggo has a name and an e-mail address for the people responsible for this ourageous proposal.

Chris Nolan has noted that that the ugliness of the political situation in San Francisco has caused this misguided legislative proposal to come about. (I'm so glad Chris has been covering this story!) While I agree with Chris in favoring full disclosure of any payments made during the course of a campaign, I do not see legal or ecomomic correaltion between a blogger's hit count and a government's right to single that blog out for audits.

It reminds me of Alberto Gonzales and the part he played in crafting the infamous torture memo. Even with the toughest challenge to security that comes about, once you make torture an acceptable legal practice, you open the door to the possibility of something vile and dangerous to our very sense of freedom, rule of law, and democracy. I see the bloggers' case in the same light. Once you start legislating and regulating bloggers' freedoms based on unfounded suspicions, the Constitution flies out of the window.

Some are saying that maybe this legislation doesn't look so bad after all. I say, if you give these people an inch and they'll take a mile. Leave bloggers alone.

Beware - They're Telling You What You Stand For

Okay. I am half-joking. I am still very upset over the DLC's failure to understand the heart of most Democrats over the past four years.

If Bruce Reed and Al From find that most American do not know what Democrats stand for and that "a disturbing number of fellow Democrats wonder the same thing," I can only suggest that they look back at their own failures over the past four years. They would have followed a garbage truck if the opinion polls had told them it smelled good. If the Democratic party is going to emerge with renewed strength, it will be because most educated Democrats have always known what the party was supposed to be standing for, and they could see that Democrats were acting spineless while the DLC, led by Reed and From, was following the garbage truck.

Watch out. They're trying to tell you what you stand for again. After the last four years, I have to say I don't trust these people to tell me what I stand for.

I am particularly insulted by the way this line sounds:

"Like it or not, making the world safe from terror will be America's central challenge for the next decade, if not beyond."

Reed and From are speaking to us as if we are children, rather than participants in a healthy democracy. What they do not seem to understand is that most Democrats believe that President Bush breached the trust that is sacred between a President and the citizens of the democracy he is leading. We are not clueless and naive creatures of the far left who only wish to wear floral wreaths around our heads and chant anti-war slogans. We were burned by this President. No one challenged him at a time we all suspected his administration was massaging bad intelligence to take us to an elective war. Centrist Democrats sat on their spines rather than standing up to the tough challenge of questioning the secretive and plotting Bush administration. Why do you think I have such little trust for the DLC to this day? This war in Iraq is a scar on our nation that may never heal.

We know very well that we are faced with terrorism - a new tactic for war against us in all parts of the world. If we are going to proceed, we need party leaders to stop this condescending talk, and let's proceed as equal partners in deciding what we stand for.

On a positive note, I think David E. Price of North Carolina has some productive things to say in an essay about Faith and politics.

Excerpt:

It is erroneous to assume that a committed Christian or Jew will have a fixed or formulaic view on capital punishment, abortion, same-sex relationships, the alleviation of poverty, war and peace, and many other issues. The insularity of our religious communities -- and, often, of the political circles we move in -- discourages dialogue and debate.....

....Integral to the Jewish and Christian traditions is the realization that people are inclined to a kind of idolatry whereby they identify their own interest or ideology with God's sovereign will. Like "God-fearing" people of all ages, Niebuhr wrote, we "are never safe against the temptation of claiming God too simply as the sanctifier of whatever we most fervently desire." Note that, once again, the most powerful argument against religious pretension is not secular but theological. Claiming divine sanction for our own power or program does not merely undermine American pluralism; it also flies in the face of our religious understanding of human sinfulness and divine transcendence.

So let us engage: our country needs the full-throated advocacy of "liberty and justice for all" -- of policies that realize opportunity, responsibility, and community -- that only Democrats and progressives are likely to make. We can engage far more effectively by taking explicit account of the faith traditions which provide most Americans with their personal and moral frames of reference. This is partly a matter of communicating effectively, but also of understanding more fully what is required of us and our society as heirs to these riches. A more deeply rooted politics will enable us to make a more authentic and persuasive case for a just society, even as it equips us to resist political arrogance and pretension and to defend the American constitutional order..."

Meet Bill Owens

I'd like to introduce you to Bill Owens, whose blog I luckily stumbled upon while blog-surfing.

I think he's a gifted photographer and a marvelous tour guide. At his New England Photo Blog, he takes you on a trip with him through many New England towns.

Bill's only been blogging for a short while, and I expect we'll see and hear about many more of his Yankee travels in the future.

I especially appreciated his photo of abolitionist John Brown's birthplace, which is in Torrington, Ct. As David would tell you, I am fascinated with the tale of John Brown. David took me to the courthouse where John Brown was tried in Charles Town, West Virginia. We also visited Harper's Ferry, where the infamous raid on the armory took place. (my Harper's Ferry photo) Sometime between Jan. 27 and Feb. 16, 1857, John Brown had traveled to my own city of Syracuse trying to raise money for his cause.

Many times, I have made the trip to John Brown's farm (and site of his grave) in the Adirondack Mountain town of North Elba, N.Y. Adirondack singer/songwriter Peggy Eyres wrote a song about Mary Brown, the wife of John Brown. Eyres wrote in her recording "Cloudsplitter's" liner notes:

"As usual, history barely mentions his wife Mary, who was equally devoted to the freedom of the slaves. So when {historian} Monica McGaughey gave me her research, including a couple of Mary's letters, I jumped at the challenge to give voice to another Adirondack woman."

Cloudsplitter was also the title of the Russell Banks novel based upon the life and times of John Brown.

There are vigilantes who recently converged upon Tombstone, Arizona, and I'm afraid they're going to hurt a lot of innocent people. We are a nations of laws. We forgot the rule of law in the recent Schiavo case because of high emotions, and I see this vigilante case as the same thing. Citizens taking it upon themselves to administer law and justice with high emotion should be unacceptable to law enforcement officials in Arizona state. Innocent folks are going to be hurt.

Some GOP senators appear to be hesitant about supporting the nuclear option - doing away with the Senate filibuster for judicial nominees - knowing it could be used against them in the future. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania, John McCain of Arizona, Olympia Snowe of Maine, John Warner of Virginia and Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island have either said they oppose changing the rules or have declined to promise to support the change.

Impeachment Ahead for Schiavo Judges?

The House majority leader, Rep. Tom DeLay, blamed Terri Schiavo's death on judges who refused to order her kept alive, and said he would consider bringing impeachment proceedings against judges involved in the case. His comments drew scorn from Senator Kennedy, a Democrat of Massachusetts who accused Republicans of assaulting the independence of the judiciary. He suggested DeLay's commentscould lead to violence against judges. DeLay signaled yesterday that the battle was not over.

Syrian Foreign Minister, Farouk Al-Share, and his visiting Iranian counterpart, Kamal Kharrazi, have agreed that security and stability must be maintained in Lebanon. The two foreign ministers also said during talks that the factions in Lebanon must reach national reconciliation to resist interference from outside forces, before it can over come the current crisis.Kharrazi said after the talks that the present situation in the Middle East is worrisome, as some political forces try to capitalize on the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri.

The Window

The Window

Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room. One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain the fluid from his lungs. His bed was next to the room's only window. The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back.

The men talked for hours on end. They spoke of their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their involvement in the military service, where they had been on vacation.

Every afternoon when the man in the bed by the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window.

The man in the other bed began to live for those one-hour periods where his world would be broadened and enlivened by all the activity and color of the world outside.

The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake. Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Young lovers walked arm in arm amidst flowers of every color and a fine view of the city skyline could be seen in the distance.



As the man by the window described all this in exquisite detail, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine the picturesque scene.

One warm afternoon the man by the window described a parade passing by. Although the other man couldn't hear the band - he could see it. In his mind's eye as the gentleman by the window portrayed it with descriptive words.
Days and weeks passed. One morning, the day nurse arrived to bring water for their baths only to find the lifeless body of the man by the window, who had died peacefully in his sleep. She was saddened and called the hospital attendants to take the body away.

As soon as it seemed appropriate, the other man asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the switch, and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone.

Slowly, painfully, he propped himself up on one elbow to take his first look at the real world outside. He strained to slowly turn to look out the window beside the bed. It faced a blank wall.

The man asked the nurse what could have compelled his deceased roommate who had described such wonderful things outside this window. The nurse responded that the man was blind and could not even see the wall.

Loss

I am lately facing a lot of loss in my personal life.
Dealing with it is not easy, and I know we must all face loss at some time in our lives. In order to care for others, we have to have experienced the pain of loss ourselves. It helps to know I am not alone. I treasure the friends and loved ones who've been there for me. I suppose you can find meaning and purpose in almost any experience, even when it's the bitter disappointment and sadness that comes with loss.

That's what I like about the quote above. The human spirit should never be overcome by even the deepest grief. Something, even the smallest of things, always remains for which we can hope. I suppose I'm telling you this because I'm hanging on to the hope for the glimmer of those smallest miracles myself. Perhaps someone landing here, whether intended or by chance, will be in need and will take heart from having read these simple words.

There are times we have to take a step back and look at ourselves in a different light..through someone else's eyes. We are not being untrue to ourselves by taking such action, for it is in the hope of examining ourselves for the goal of improvement. We must see our democracy in the same light, for we are the people who are represented in the halls of Congress. Taking a step outside our geographic isolation to listen to the views of well-educated people who have spent a good part of their lives in other lands is one of the best ways to improve the health of democracy and the protection of our own natural freedom.

Bora aka Coturnix has compared Bush to Milosevic in the past, but he now says he thinks Bush may be more dangerous than Milosevic because of a growing atmosphere of anti-intellectualism and miseducation in the U.S. He comments that he saw a quick slide into fascism and civil war in his native country (once Yugoslavia), where he says, "if you go to a dim smoky bar and sit next to a local drunk, he is likely to have a book with him." He thinks it can happen even more quickly here because "the Right is unified in many ways: politically, financially and emotionally." His post is well worth the time to read.

Another post I recommend by Coturnix is a question about what we should call Republicans, if we wish to accurately frame their political goals for America. His answer is to call them 'regressives', which he admits may "invoke the idea of developmental regression (i.e., something like a potty-trained child pooping in his pants again), or even retardation." (Great wording, Bora).

I was asked why I haven't commented on the WMD Commission report that shows that intelligence was "dead-wrong" on Iraq. I'll tell you why. We have known it all along. What I would like to know is when we'll see an official report examining the role of the White House, particularly Dick Cheney and his band of NeoCons, in massaging the data on WMD. The Commission's report did not deal with that subject matter at all.

The Atlanta-based 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has aid that, despite fervent and sincere action on the part of the family of Terri Schiavo and Congress, "the time has come for dispassionate discharge of duty." The court has formally criticized certain politicians in Congress, saying they are "acting in a manner demonstrably at odds with our Founding Fathers' blueprint for the governance of a free people our Constitution."

It's all over now. Terri is dead. Her body has died. I'm not sure what became of the fullness of spirit she once possessed. No one does.

Terri's parents had wanted to care for Terri, as she existed after her heart failure which was brought on by an eating disorder. I believe, if they'd placed a great value upon the life she had left within her, quality notwithstanding, that Michael Schiavo should have agreed to somehow contract with the parents to let them take over all legal responsibility for their daughter's care. She wouldn't have lived forever, and she was not in any pain. The marriage vow that includes the contingencies "in sickness and in health" obviously didn't mean as much to Michael as it might have to other spouses in his position. He wanted to move on with his life, and I'm certainly not going to judge him for that. When it comes to the life or death of his wife, however, we were thrust into the judge's seat, weren't we? All eyes were upon Michael Schiavo. Most people I speak with do not trust that his motives are based in love. No one knows what's in a person's heart, though. I will say that his respect for Terri's family's wishes is not what I would view as particularly healthy or postive. I suppose you could say the same thing about the parents' respect for Schiavo's wishes, if you believe his motives were based on his caring for his wife's wishes.

The bottom line is this: You cannot expect that a court of law could force a family to agree with one another. That would eliminate our freedom to choose on family matters of life, death, and dignity, wouldn't it? The government does not belong in our houses and in our hearts.

This has been a great interpersonal tragedy for the family, but it should never have been made into a political show.

Michael Schiavo has never budged on the issue. The standing law is what it is. You cannot blame a judge or a court or a law for what the family could not work out amongst themselves.

We must not lose respect for the rule of law, through all of this. We are a nation of laws - not men or women.

Perhaps mainstream media has been reduced to self-selecting choices based solely upon ideology. That would mean old-fashioned, balanced investigative journalism on cable networks is dead as a doornail and we are freely admitting it - and some of us have decided to laugh as long as we're getting a bit of news we think we want.

If you ask me, I'm glad Jon Stewart is there to wrap the insanity into a shitball of delight. I know a lot of young people out there agree with me. I don't know what we'd do without Stewart, Colbert, Corddry and crew.

In an article about Stewart in the current Harvard Political Review (HPR), Harvard professor of government Barry Burden comments:

"..in the last few years, with things like Fox News rising on the right, people are self-selecting into media outlets that are merely reinforcing their preexisting ideas. People are looking for facts, arguments or even humor that agree with what they thought ahead of time."

"It is ironic that satire offering criticism of politics has the power to get people politically involved. Perhaps there are some youth who are cynical about politics, not particularly informed, but still feeling some connection to what is going on, and are tuning into Comedy Central and are coming away a little less cynical and little more informed."

Julie Hinds of the Detroit Free Press has written a feature (Entertainment) article about Stewart. In it, she writes:

Stewart insists he had nothing to do with the fact that CNN announced plans to drop "Crossfire," the long-running show where conservatives yelled at liberals, from its schedule. (The show is still on the air.) In October, Stewart went on the show and told the co-hosts what he really thought: that scream fest political shows were hurting America. And he called co-host Tucker Carlson a, well, colorful name. Not too long afterward, the president of CNN told the press Stewart had a point.


"Look, as much as these guys talk, if Pol Pot's talk show was doing really well in the ratings, he'd still have a talk show," says Stewart.

I'm certain she is no longer be alive to tell her story today. Somehow, that saddens me. I feel that something is lost. There are so many stories each immigrant would have to tell us, if only we had time to listen. I purchased this postcard at a collectibles show. For some reason, the words haunted me and I couldn't put it back in its neat place among the other carefully categorized and organized cards. It came alive, and to put it back would have meant the memory of the love and good wishes Aggie had conveyed to Ada would have been put back to sleep.

John Edwards was interviewed by Fox News' Alan Colmes for last night's broadcast. Ther transcript can be seen here.

He said he doesn't believe he would have voted to confirm Condoleezza Rice as Secretary of State if he had still been in the Senate, nor would he have voted to confirm Alberto Gonzales as Attorney General because of the role that he played in U.S. torture policy and the infamous torture memo.

When asked what thought about the Terri Schiavo case, Edwards said:

"I think — I think first of all what's happening in the Schiavo case is a terrible tragedy... it's just painful to watch. I mean, I respond very personally to it. It's an awful, awful thing. But here's what I would say: This is something that as a moral issue should be left to the family. And when we have what we're seeing now with this family, that's what the courts are there for, to determine what the right thing is to do and what the wishes of the patient were. I think it is wrong to have a bunch of politicians in Washington getting involved in this."

Edwards stressed that his own personal cause is doing something about poverty in America.


Edwards will be in Iowa this week, and the Internet is buzzing about 2008.

One of Greensboro's News-Record editorials this week suggests that governments and private-sector initiatives should promote better avenues to economic progress in at least four ways: higher education, homeownership, small-business development and retirement security. They believe that Edwards may be positioning himself for another presidential campaign, but "he'll spend his time well in the interim if he reshapes the debate about helping the poor."

25 Years After Oscar Romero

The prophet is a light for our world, a voice that illuminates the darkness of sin and points the way towards overcoming that darkness. We are called to be light. Take with utmost seriousness what you are doing. We do not pass this light to one another as mere ritual or inspiration, something to make us feel good and to look beautiful.

Consider the words of Archbishop Oscar Romero of El Slavador, who was killed 25 years ago. He gave his last homily on March 24, 1980 moments before a sharpshooter from a death-squad felled him, silencing his radical message of love. Two months earlier, Romero had written to U.S. President Jimmy Carter pleading with him to cease sending military aid to El Slavador because, he wrote, "it is being used to repress my people." The U.S. had sent $1.5 million in aid every day for 12 years. His letter went unheeded.

Romero had a simple message, but it contained the words that are hardest to hear, hardest to learn, hardest to live.

Many people complained that the film, The Passion of the Christ, contained too much gratuitous violence. When you consider that it was a message about the suffering of the world throughout the sad history of mankind's greed and often-violent oppression of the poor, the blood and gore displayed in the film begins to make all too much sense. Movies are generally meant to take us on a breezy route to beauty, but real beauty lies in the the light that reveals the angels of our higher nature. Those angels do not resemble Raphael's flowery vision, but bear the essence of the martyrs of Jusepe De Ribera's artistc interpretation.

Archbishop Romero said:

"God needs the people themselves to save the world. The world of the poor teaches us that liberation will arrive only when the poor are not simply on the receiving end of hand-outs from governments or from the churches, but when they themselves are the masters and protagonists of their own struggle for liberation."

"Unjust social structures are the roots of all violence and disturbances. The church's hard mission is to uproot sins from history, from the political order, from the economy."

"The church has put itself on the side of the poor and has assumed their defense. This means that the church incarnates itself in the world of the poor, proclaims a good news, gives hope, inspires a liberating praxis, defends the cause of the poor and participates in their destiny.

A Christian who does not wish to live this commitment of solidarity with the poor is not worthy of the name Christian. Go out and be light. May your word burn like the word of the prophets. May your defense of the poor and suffering, the victims of injustice and oppression, be a transforming power for our world."

Oscar Romero was once a little boy like the one who may be sleeping warm and snug in your cribs or tiny beds tonight. Being a witness to unspeakable injustice changed his heart and gave him focus. He was a prophet who lived in our time.

George W. Bush beats a mean drum when it comes to giving rhetorical lip service to Jesus, but he isn't going to be the one to save the world through his perverted politics. It's up to us - every one of us - to see that justice comes to the poor in the name of true liberation, regardless of their country of origin or their religion. They must be free to be the masters and protagonists of their own struggles.

I am not ashamed to say that I am committed to bear the force of love, no matter how radical that idea may seem to you; no matter how hard it may be for your ears to hear or your eyes to see.

I thank God for sending men like Oscar Romero to show us the face of angels who dwell among us.

A Word of Advice For Democrats

At MyDD, Chris Bowers leads us to a Matt Taibbi piece where he is upset with Taibbi for insinuating that the Democrats might abandon Social Security as a trade-off for National Security credibility. Chris Bowers believes there are unnecessary divisions being created in the Democratic party by some giving themselves the unofficial moniker, "National Security Democrats". Beating the drums about a national security and foreign affairs gap, Democrats are falling into the frame-trap set by the GOP, which too often shows Democrats as soft on National Security. He claims that the press only gives the big megaphone - the interviews - to those Democrats.

Bowers says:

"....the uniting feature about the big names who joined this group seems to be that they were wrong when it came to Iraq, and that they took a position that was in contradiction to the vast majority of those people who they claim to represent."

What is the answer to this problem? If I were a Congressional Democrat who'd voted "Yes" to the 2002 Iraq resolution and I was thinking about running for President, I would cautiously watch how I chose to proceed. I believe there is a faction within the Bush administration of whom an overwhleming majority of (left-to-moderate) Democrats not only distrust, but deplore. It is the faction Sy Hersh called "a cult" and it has taken over our nation's foreign policy. The Iraq War that was promoted by this faction - known as the NeoConservatives - has caused those millions of Democratic voters to deeply distrust any Congressional Democrat who failed to adequately question the merits of the Iraq resolution and raise concerns about the people who were manipulating and interpreting the related intelligence. We now know that MI6 chief Richard Dearlove said that he had briefed Tony Blair, well before the war, that America's Iraq intelligence was "fixed" to meet the administration's goal of invading Iraq at all costs.

What any Democrat serious about running for President in 2008 should think about is to start talking about this up-front. It's their political funeral if they don't. The mainstream media does not hold the same sway that it once did with informed Democratic voters. The blogs and the internet are a new tour de force in campaigns. Grassroots Democrats are entering the political scene with a force never before witnessed in American politics.

If any Democratic presidential hopeful thinks we want to hear our candidates competing with the NeoConservatives for who's the tougher cookie, the cookie's going to crumble. The Democrats should be highly criticizing the NeoConservatives and exposing the part they played in taking our country into the most unwise elective war since Viet Nam.

It's time we heard something realistic from our Democratic presidential-hopefuls. We aren't willing to play into any fantasy when it comes to our troops and how we decide to use them. I'm sick and tired of being labeled "a fanatic" for only wanting the truth and openness from our government. Truthfulness and openness are moral values and no one - especially a Republican government of free people - should be exempt from following them.

If Congressional Democrats want our trust back, and if they want our unwavering support, they need to:

- Start talking from a new frame of reference. Stop falling into GOP-frame traps.

- Talk about the process by which we eventually went to pre-emptive war in 2003, and how that process failed miserably...and why. Name the players who deceived the American people - and how they did it. Don't be shy about it.

- Tell us it's not going to happen that way - ever again. Make that promise. Our trust in American leadership has been breached. Tell us how your plan is superior to theirs. It will sound more honest and convincing than telling us how tough you wish you were. Why are you afraid? The majority of Americans polled recently agree that this war was not worth the lives it's taken. Most want our troops home - yesterday.

Congratulations go out to the UNC Tar Heels and Michigan State Spartans for their big win(s) at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse yesterday. The two teams will meet this Saturday in St. Louis for a national semifinal game. Mike Waters of the Syracuse Post Standard has a story about the UNC Tar Heels team - three members, in particular: North Carolina seniors Jawad Williams, Melvin Scott and Jackie Manuel.

There were many letters to the editor printed in the Syracuse Post Standard this morning by citizens who support the Onondaga Nation's Land Rights lawsuit. They are not available online. The lawsuit asks the federal court to declare that the Onondaga Nation is the rightful owner of a 4,000-square-mile strip of New York land from Pennsylvania to the Thousand Islands. The Post Standard's Mike McAndrew reports that tribal rivalry is playing no part in this land rights case.

Sid Hill, a tadodaho of the Onondaga Nation, believes that it is New York's strategy to split the tribes of the Six Nations up. Hill has said. "Divide and conquer. You can see the casino deals are splitting nations."

The land claim area has no precise boundaries but includes parts of 11 Upstate counties: Broome, Cortland, Cayuga, Chenango, Jefferson, Lewis, Madison, Onondaga, Oswego, Tioga and Tompkins. The swath of land varies in width from 10 miles to 40 miles and includes the cities of Syracuse, Binghamton, Watertown, Cortland, Fulton, and Oswego.

While other tribal land claims are being used as bargaining chips in casino negotiations, Onondaga leaders said they would use their land claim to compel the state to undertake environmental cleanup of hazardous sites in the land claim area -- specifically Onondaga Lake.

"Our concern is for the water, the land, the air. They are not well," said Sid Hill, the tribe's spiritual leader. "It is the duty of the nation's leaders to work for a healing of this land, to protect it, and to pass it on to future generations."

The Syracuse lake -- a sacred location regarded as the birthplace of the Iroquois Confederacy -- is a federal Superfund site and one of the most polluted bodies of water in the world.

In an address given by President Thomas Jefferson to the Six Nations' religious prophet Handsome Lake, one cannot wonder - if Jefferson could see the state of Onondaga Lake today - what he might think about the real consequence of "a little land well-stocked".

"A little land well stocked and improved, will yield more than a great deal without stock or improvement. I hope, therefore, that on further reflection, you will see this transaction in a more favorable light, both as it concerns the interest of your nation, and the exercise of that superintending care which I am sincerely anxious to employ for their subsistence and happiness. Go on then, brother, in the great reformation you have undertaken. Persuade our red brethren then to be sober, and to cultivate their lands; and their women to spin and weave for their families. You will soon see your women and children well fed and clothed, your men living happily in peace and plenty, and your numbers increasing from year to year. It will be a great glory to you to have been the instrument of so happy a change, and your children's children, from generation to generation, will repeat your name with love and gratitude forever. In all your enterprises for the good of your people, you may count with confidence on the aid and protection of the United States, and on the sincerity and zeal with which I am myself animated in the furthering of this humane work. Thomas Friedman reminds us that, by doing nothing to lower U.S. oil consumption, we are financing both sides in the war on terrorism and strengthening the worst governments in the world. Smart geopolitics means smart fiscal policy, smart climate policy, and most of all - smart politics.

Oil prices have shot up by nearly 20 percent in the past five weeks to around $54 a barrel in New York — a little more than $1 shy of all-time records. OPEC is playing games as we speak, ensuring that they, in conjunction with U.S. oil companies, will continue raping Americans at the gas pumps. At Common Ills, there is reference to an article in April's Harpers magazine by Greg Palast in which he says NeoCons were plotting the destruction of OPEC, but failed to predict the virulent resistance of the U.S. oil industry itself. Palast says that the U.S. State Department officially denied the existence of a 323-page plan drawn up by ex-U.S. oil company officials for an Iraqi state-owned oil company under which the state would maintain official title to the reserves but operation and control would be given to foreign oil companies. The OPEC-friendly policy, which allows for a continued stranglehold on the U.S economy, was driven by none other than VP Dick Cheney.

"What is behind the near-doubling of crude oil prices over the last two years? The period coincides with the war in Iraq, as well as unrest in oil-producers Nigeria and Venezuela. But analysts say the trend cannot be explained solely by conflict and chaos on the world stage. Rather, they point to a dramatic boost in global oil consumption in 2003 and 2004 that more than doubled the rate of increase from previous years. Manouchehr Takin, an analyst at Britain's Center for Global Energy Studies, points to one country in particular.

"Chinese growth in oil imports has been the major force behind the growth in world oil demand," he reminded.

Mr. Takin says plans by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries for expanding production capacity were based on previous assumptions of slower growth in demand. Today, only three of the cartel's 11 members - Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates - have the capacity to boost production to any appreciable degree."
